… I have studied and taught the great literature all my life, and those stories are replete with characters that let opportunities slip by. But what I teach is more than just literature. It’s lessons and life. If I don’t follow the tenets of those lessons, I’m not the man I thought I was. The man I want to be.”
— Max Medina, Gilmore Girls

Max. Max Medina was first introduced to the Gilmore Girls audience as one of Rory’s teachers at Chilton. While his role as Lorelai’s boyfriend and eventual fiancée has varied responses from the Gilmore Girls fanbase, his excellence as a teacher is widely acknowledged. The above quote is one of my favorites because it beautifully reflects the foundation of The Gilmore Book Club.

Many of the blogs I’ve written have extolled the value of books and how they can change your life for the better. All of my writings are examples of the impact each book has had on me to serve as a guide for how books could affect your own life.

The Gilmore Book Club is not a Chilton essay test. It is not a solely academic assessment of literature. It is a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness through the lens of literature. And every time That’s how I read books, and that’s how Max and Rory would read too.

Want to read like Rory and me?

Here are a few things I like to keep in mind when I read:

1.     What do I connect with? What resonates with me?

2.     Why do I connect with this?

3.     What does this remind me of?

4.     What associations can I make from this?

5.     What does not connect with me? What does not resonate with me?

6.     Why may I not be connecting with this?

7.     What am I thinking about right now?

8.     What is jumping out at me- for any reason?

These questions are pretty open to interpretation; reading and interpreting books like Rory Gilmore is all about what you put into it. Answer one question or answer them all. Write answers in your journal, put sticky notes by quotes, write a note on your phone- whatever works for you. Mark passages, take some time away, and then revisit them later to see what connections you can make.

You don’t have to do a deep-dive for every book you read like I do; simply reframing the way you look at and think about reading can make a huge difference.

Remember, reading a book is an experience for you. Books have the power to form a special bond with the mind of the reader because each readers’ mind is uniquely different from that of other readers. Using that bond to your advantage, to help you heal and grow, can change your life. All you have to do to tap into the power of books is just be open to the process and you’ll be reading like Rory Gilmore in no time!
